Martin Machado spent six months aboard a merchant ship and made this short film to answer the questions people keep asking him about life at sea. He walks through the daily routine of a working mariner: watch schedules, cargo operations, the layout of the ship, and the long stretches of ocean between ports. The tone is plain and practical rather than dramatic, closer to a first-person explainer than a travelogue, with Machado narrating over footage he shot himself of the crew, the bridge, and the machinery that keeps a merchant vessel running. He covers the basics of how someone gets into the merchant marine as a career, what the pay and time-off structure looks like, and what surprised him about isolation and confinement on a working ship. It is a firsthand account rather than an industry expose, useful mainly for anyone curious what the job actually involves day to day.
