On July 1, 1863, the men of Maine's 16th Volunteer Infantry Regiment are ordered to hold a position north of Gettysburg at all costs, buying time for the rest of the Union line to form while knowing they will likely be captured or killed doing it. Maine Public Broadcasting built this film for the battle's 150th anniversary, drawing on soldiers' letters, diaries, and period photographs to reconstruct what happened on that ridge and why the order was given. Archival images stand in for footage that does not exist, paired with the men's own words read over them, so the account stays close to firsthand testimony rather than narrated summary. The film also steps back from the regiment's story to lay out the wider battle, its causes, its casualty count, and its long aftermath in American memory. Produced by Daniel Lambert in partnership with the Maine State Archives, it treats one regiment's sacrifice as a way into the larger three-day battle that turned the war.
