In Haiti, poor families hand children over to wealthier relatives or strangers as domestic servants known as restaveks, a term from the French "rester avec," to stay with. Journalist Rageh Omaar travels into the villages where child slave traders operate, tracing how children are lured or sold away from their families and put to work in households where they face physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. The film follows that trade beyond Haiti's borders too, showing how some children end up trafficked into the United States and kept in the same silence. Omaar interviews survivors and investigators to lay out the mechanics of how the practice functions and why it persists despite being illegal. The film cites a global figure of roughly 8.4 million child slaves worldwide, more than five million of them in forced labor, using Haiti's restavek system as a close-up case study of a much larger pattern of exploitation.
