Slavery and the Making of America

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Slavery arrives in the British colonies in 1619 and this four-part series traces its growth into the economic engine of a nation, from Virginia tobacco fields to South Carolina rice plantations to the cotton boom that made the antebellum South rich. Narration by Morgan Freeman carries the story through the Middle Passage, the auction block, and the daily mechanics of bondage, while historians such as Ira Berlin and James Horton explain how slavery shaped law, religion, and family life for the enslaved and how it entangled itself with the Northern economy as well, through shipping, banking, and textile mills. The series follows enslaved people who resisted and escaped, including accounts tied to the Underground Railroad, and tracks the political fractures over slavery's expansion into new territories that led to the Civil War. Reenactments and period documents sit alongside plantation records and runaway notices, building a picture of slavery not as a regional footnote but as the foundation of the country's early wealth and its deepest political conflict.
