Snap Snap Snap: A Documentary about a United States Air Force Photojournalist

2012 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Staff Sgt. Ryan Crane carries a camera instead of a rifle into combat, and this short film follows him through what that job actually involves. As an Air Force photojournalist, Crane is tasked with documenting firefights, patrols, and the aftermath of violence while staying alert enough to survive them, and he talks through what it feels like to frame a photograph while under fire. The film sits with him afterward too, letting him describe the toll the work leaves on his body and his mind once the deployment ends and the adrenaline does not immediately follow. There is no narrator standing between Crane and the camera; his own account, paired with the images he has made in the field, carries the film. It is a small, focused portrait of a job most war documentaries never mention: the person behind the lens who is also standing in the line of fire.
