The Sun's surface hosts jets, loops of electrified gas, and eruptions called coronal mass ejections that can send over a billion tons of solar particles toward Earth. This film traces the history of that violence, starting with the first recorded major solar event on September 1, 1859, which lit auroras as far south as the tropics. A century later a similar outburst disabled Quebec's power grid, leaving six million people without electricity for nine hours, a preview of what a stronger storm could do to a world now dependent on the Internet. Scientists explain how the Sun's core acts as a nuclear furnace, fusing hydrogen under immense heat and pressure to drive the flares and tornadoes visible on its surface. Much of the footage comes from scientific visualizations built on Blue Waters, a supercomputer at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, rendering the Sun's magnetic fields and plasma in detail rarely seen. With major storms estimated to recur roughly every 150 years, the film lays out what forecasters are watching for and why the next one matters more than the last.
