Costa Rica's volcanoes, waterfalls and coastline frame this portrait of people whose lives are shaped by the landscape. Eladio lives in the strip of land between the volcanic highlands and the sea, working the terrain that most visitors only photograph. Manolo, an aging cowboy, tends cattle in a countryside that has changed around him. Claudine, a biologist, tracks the country's wildlife and explains what makes its ecosystems so dense with species relative to its size. The film moves between these three threads rather than following a single narrative, using their daily routines, ranch work, fieldwork, coastal life, to build a picture of the country from the ground up instead of from a tourist itinerary. Surfers working the Pacific breaks round out the picture of a coastline that draws people for very different reasons. Shot on location across the volcanic interior and the coast, the film lets its subjects narrate their own relationship to the land rather than leaning on a single outside narrator.
