Japan's volcanic geography frames three separate stories of people pushing against extremes. On Yonaguni, a small island at the western edge of the country, Shotaro Maja dives the underwater rock formation his father discovered in 1984, weighing whether the site is a natural feature or a sunken archaeological ruin. Near Nagano, ice climber Nae Yagi, a national champion at 31, scouts an unclimbed route, working through the doubt that comes with a sport where a single mistake is fatal. The film then joins Ondekoza, a taiko drumming troupe that has lived and trained communally for 46 years, following its youngest member, Naoto Kinoshita, through the group's Soga Kuron code, which treats long-distance running as inseparable from musicianship and makes their concerts as physically demanding as a marathon. Shot on location across the island's coasts, mountains, and rural training grounds, the film moves between these three lives without forcing a single thesis, letting geology, sport, and tradition sit side by side as different answers to the same landscape.
