Laos unfolds through three lives tied to the Mekong River. Leua, an itinerant vendor, spends part of the year traveling with his family along the Upper Mekong near where China, Burma, and Thailand meet, navigating a river he has known his whole life. Pheng drives a battered old army truck into the country's most remote corners, practicing meditation along the way as he works toward the wisdom every Buddhist hopes to reach. Further south near the Cambodian border, the film settles at Khone Phapheng Falls, the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia, where fisherman Sohane works the turbulent water above the falls in one of the most dangerous trades on the river, trusting his safety to the spirits believed to inhabit the Mekong. The camera stays close to daily routine rather than narration-heavy explanation, following boats, markets, and roadside stops to build a portrait of a country still organized around one river.
