Somewhere on Earth: Malawi
Malawi gets its turn in this travel series, covering the southern African nation often overshadowed by Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia despite holding one of the largest lakes on the continent within its borders. The film follows three lives shaped by the landscape. Gaspar, 27, has spent eleven years on the road earning a living with a one-of-a-kind guitar and is now heading home to his native village. Freddie, a young Dane raised in Tanzania and trained to fly in South Africa, works as a bush pilot, navigating the country from the air. Teresa, a champion runner, returns each year to defend her title in an extreme half-marathon up the slopes of Mount Mulanje, Malawi's highest peak. Shot on location with observational footage and interviews, the episode moves between plains, highlands and lakeshore, using these three stories to sketch a picture of daily life and ambition in one of the world's poorer countries.
