Nevada's deserts and mountains provide the backdrop for three portraits of people who chose lives on the fringe of ordinary work. In Reno, artist Matt Schultz builds large-scale installations he hauls out to the Black Rock Desert, empty most of the year but transformed each August into the Burning Man festival grounds. Texas musician Andy Hedges, 35, drives Highway 50, dubbed by Life magazine "The Loneliest Road in America," chasing the cowboy culture that feeds his songwriting. At Las Vegas International Airport, former Air Force fighter pilot Tex Coe, eleven years in the service, now runs an aerobatics outfit where his crew preps stunt planes on the tarmac each morning before flying maneuvers built to flirt with disaster. The film moves between these three strands without forcing them into a single argument, letting the desert's emptiness and the state's outlaw reputation connect a festival organizer, a touring musician, and a stunt pilot who each found their own way to live outside the ordinary rules.
