São Tomé and Príncipe sits on the Equator off the coast of Gabon, a volcanic archipelago settled by Portuguese colonists and the descendants of enslaved Africans. The film follows three islanders whose lives trace the country's mix of nature and culture. Márcio Gonçalves works for MARAPA, one of the country's first environmental NGOs, patrolling coastline and reef to protect marine wildlife. Diamantino Vasconcelos farms a forest plot of cocoa, the crop that built the islands' economy, and is locally known as much for his singing and acting as for his harvest. On the neighboring island of Príncipe, Portuguese researcher Maria do Céu Madureira, affiliated with the University of Coimbra, hikes the mountains cataloguing plants for ethnopharmacology, searching for medicinal uses passed down through generations. Shot on location in jungle, farmland, and coastal waters, the film moves between these three portraits to show a small, isolated nation where subsistence farming, conservation work, and traditional plant knowledge all depend on the same unspoiled land.
