Suriname sits wedged between the Amazon and the Atlantic, a country so thick with rainforest that pirogue and small plane are still the only ways into its interior. The film follows three residents whose lives run through that geography. Fabian Vas, a descendant of the country's original Dutch colonists known locally as a buru, photographs the forests and rivers he grew up exploring. Rosanne Peuscher, Suriname's only flying doctor, pilots herself to isolated Amazon communities for the medical mission Medische Zending, landing where no road reaches. Monique Pool, once a finalist for CNN Hero of the Year, runs a backyard sanctuary sheltering sloths, porcupines, anteaters, and a giant anteater displaced by deforestation and the country's illegal gold mining. Between these threads the camera moves through the forest canopy, riverside villages, and the mixed communities that make up Suriname's population. The result is a portrait of a small, little-known country built from the people trying to document it, heal it, and protect what lives in it.
