Yunnan province, whose name translates as "south of clouds," is home to more officially recognized ethnic minorities than anywhere else in China, and this film travels through its mountains and river valleys to meet some of them. Village markets, traditional dress, farming rhythms, and local festivals appear on camera as the crew moves between communities that outsiders rarely see covered on television. Elders and craftspeople describe customs tied to language, dress, and belief that have persisted despite decades of modernization pressure from Beijing and the pull of migration to coastal cities. The film treats each group on its own terms rather than folding them into a single "minority" story, showing distinct textiles, dialects, and rituals from one valley to the next. Narration stays mostly out of the way, letting daily routines, from rice terraces to temple offerings, carry the sense of a region shaped as much by geography as by ethnicity.
