Spain's Baby Market

2011 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

For decades under and after the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco, Spanish parents were told their newborns had died in the delivery room, only to learn years or decades later that the children were alive, raised by other families who had paid for them. This film follows the scandal known as Spain's stolen babies, tracing how doctors, nuns, and clinic administrators worked together to falsify death certificates and hand infants to buyers, often with the Catholic Church's hospitals implicated in the process. Interviews with parents who spent a lifetime believing they had lost a child, and with adults who later discovered their birth records were fabricated, carry the weight of the story. The film lays out how the practice, which began as an ideological tool under Franco to remove children from families deemed undesirable, continued for years afterward as a quiet, profitable trade. It ends with survivors pushing Spanish courts to open investigations into a network that operated, largely unpunished, for generations.
