Spain's Liquid Gold

Andalusia sits at the center of this film from Swiss broadcaster RTS, a region built on a semi-arid climate that has now gone years without enough rain. The camera moves through the Sea of Plastic, the vast expanse of greenhouses covering the coast near Almeria, where intensive agriculture has turned the area into one of Europe's biggest vegetable exporters while draining local aquifers dry. Farmers, engineers, and water managers describe a system pushed to its limit: reservoirs at historic lows, wells sunk deeper each year, and crops that depend on irrigation the land can no longer reliably supply. The film follows the researchers and companies trying to engineer a way out, from desalination plants to precision irrigation and recycled wastewater, treating water itself as the scarce commodity the title calls it. Rather than settling for a simple warning about climate change, the film stays close to the economics of the greenhouses and the trade-offs of each technical fix, showing a region betting its future on innovation it cannot yet be sure will be enough.
