Stare Into the Lights My Pretties

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Screens are everywhere, and this film asks what decades of engineering attention for profit have done to the people staring at them. It traces a line from Edward Bernays and the early architects of public relations through the rise of advertising, television, and now smartphones and social media, arguing that each new medium was built not to inform but to capture and hold focus. Interviews with technologists, psychologists, and media critics lay out how notification design, infinite scroll, and algorithmic feeds borrow directly from slot-machine psychology, and archival clips show propaganda techniques migrating from wartime posters into everyday apps. The film moves between historical footage and present-day scenes of commuters and children absorbed in their phones, using the contrast to make its point without narration doing all the work. It does not offer a tidy fix, but it lays out, step by step, how the attention economy was built and who benefits from it staying that way, leaving the viewer to reckon with their own device habits by the end.
