Statistical Mechanics II: Statistical Physics of Fields
MIT OpenCourseWare's continuation of its statistical mechanics sequence, covering the physics of fields and collective phenomena beyond the introductory course. Lecture notes and problem sets work through the hydrodynamic limit, classical field theories, phase transitions, critical phenomena, and renormalization group methods, building on earlier coverage of thermodynamics, temperature, work, heat, and entropy. The course targets advanced undergraduate or graduate physics students already comfortable with the basics of statistical mechanics and looking to extend that foundation into modern field-theoretic approaches. Materials are provided as free downloadable lecture notes and assignments through MIT OpenCourseWare, with no certificate offered. There are no video lectures noted, so the course relies on the written materials as the primary teaching resource, in keeping with MIT OCW's typical format for its physics offerings.
