More than a hundred thousand American veterans experience homelessness in a given year, and this film spends twelve months inside one attempt to change that number: the Homeless Veterans Fellowship, a transitional housing program built to move men from the street into self-sufficiency. Filmmaker Issac Goeckeritz follows ten residents through the program's routines, setbacks, and small victories, letting their own accounts of combat, addiction, and family breakdown explain how they ended up without homes in the first place. Narrator Phil Riesen threads the individual stories together without smoothing over how slow and uneven the recovery process actually is for most of the men. The camera stays close to the fellowship's day-to-day operation rather than treating homelessness as an abstract statistic, showing what a transitional housing program actually requires of the people running it and the people living in it. Produced with PBS Utah and aired on PBS, the film won a Current Affairs Program Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
