Across Germany and Ecuador, this DW documentary follows women pushing back against structures that limit their independence. In Giessen, surgeon Katja Schlosser, former head physician at Agaplesion Hospital, campaigns through her association Die Chirurginnen for the right of pregnant surgeons to keep operating, challenging clinics that bar them from the OR under restrictive readings of Germany's Maternity Protection Act. In Düsseldorf, Bahareh Husseini, who fled Iran, describes finding support through Diakonie's JUMP project, run by Jessica te Heesen, which helps refugee girls build confidence and navigate school and work; Bahareh now studies medical physics. In northern Ecuador, Patricia Yaselga's SEDAL foundation trains indigenous women who otherwise depend on the region's pesticide-heavy cut flower industry, teaching organic farming so they can earn income and feed their families without the health and soil damage the flower trade leaves behind. Interviews and on-location footage move between these three settings, tracing a common thread of women organizing for financial independence and self-determination.
