Surprising Europe – The Good Life is a powerful documentary that delves into the struggles and hardships faced by African migrants who have travelled to Europe in search of a better life. The film follows the stories of K-Nel, Marjorie, and Peter, three individuals from Kenya, Uganda, and Ghana respectively, who have made the difficult journey to Europe and have had to adapt to a new way of life.
K-Nel, a hip hop artist from Kenya, moved to Cologne when he was just 19 years old. His mantra is simple: “If you can make it in Africa, you can make it in Europe, and the other way around.” He is determined to succeed in Germany, and despite the challenges he has faced, he has no plans to return to Kenya.
Marjorie’s story is one of incredible resilience. She fled from torture and rape in Uganda and sought refuge in the UK. For seven long years, she fought for the right to stay, but she never gave up. Now, she is waiting to be reunited with her daughter, who is still in Uganda.
Peter’s journey took him to the former Yugoslavia, where he went to study medicine. He eventually became a doctor and the first African mayor in Slovenia. Peter has made a life for himself in Europe and has no plans to leave anytime soon.
The documentary is a moving tribute to the resilience and strength of these migrants, who have faced numerous challenges in their quest for a better life.
