Omaha Beach, June 6, 1944, seen through the soldiers who landed in the first wave and the weapons that waited for them. The film builds its account from interviews with D-Day veterans describing the crossing under fire, paired with CGI reconstructions that lay out the beach obstacles, machine-gun emplacements, and landing craft formations soldiers actually faced. It walks through the tactics and gear of that initial assault, including the estimate that of the 1,450 men in the first wave, more than a third became casualties within the first hour. Rather than treating the invasion as a single sweeping event, the film narrows to the mechanics of survival on a few hundred yards of sand: which units broke through, which stalled at the seawall, and what the odds actually were for the men ordered off the boats first. The result is less a broad history of the Normandy landings than a close account of what the opening minutes cost the soldiers who lived them.
