After the fall of the Assad regime, more than 30,000 prisoners have been freed from Syria's detention system, but an estimated 100,000 people remain unaccounted for. This DW film follows Hind Gharz al Deen and her younger son Ahmad as they search hospitals, morgues, and the notorious Sednaya prison for Hussam, Hind's other son, missing for eight years. Ahmad's search is especially fraught: he was himself imprisoned and tortured at Sednaya after his 2018 arrest, and he describes what happened there and the day in December he and fellow inmates were finally released. A hospital wall covered in photographs of unidentified, often disfigured bodies shows what families are up against as they try to match faces to the missing. Hind and Ahmad find no trace of Hussam by the film's end, but keep searching anyway. The film stays close to one family's ordeal to show what the collapse of a torture state actually looks like from the inside.
