Syria: Not Anymore

2013 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Aleppo during the Syrian civil war, seen through two people who chose to fight it with different weapons. Mowya is a 32-year-old rebel commander leading men into combat against the Assad regime. Nour Kelze is a 24-year-old journalist who left teaching to document the war from the front lines, one of the few women doing so. Director Matthew VanDyke, who fought alongside rebels in the 2011 Libyan Revolution before turning to filmmaking, embeds close enough to catch gunfire in the streets, makeshift field hospitals, and the exhaustion on both subjects' faces between engagements. The film skips the studio analysts and think-tank framing that dominate most Western coverage of Syria and instead lets Mowya and Nour explain, in their own words, why they stayed and fought rather than fled. It is a ground-level record of a revolution turning into a prolonged war, made by someone who picked a side before he picked up a camera.
