Taboo: Body Modifications

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Body modification practices from around the world get examined through the people who undergo them and the cultures that shape their choices. In Thailand, Kayan women add brass coils to lengthen their necks, a tradition tied to identity and, increasingly, tourism. In Cameroon, mothers practice breast ironing on their daughters, using heated stones or tools to flatten developing breasts, believing it protects girls from unwanted attention and early pregnancy. Elsewhere the film turns to Western cosmetic surgery, following women who choose silicone implants to reshape their bodies for reasons ranging from self-image to career. Interviews with practitioners, subjects, and family members sit alongside footage of the procedures themselves, letting viewers see the physical process rather than just hear it described. The episode does not rank these practices against each other so much as lay them side by side, asking what counts as mutilation, enhancement, or tradition depending on where you are standing. The throughline is control over one's own body, exercised under wildly different social pressures.
