Tuberculosis has killed more than a billion people over the last two hundred years, making it the deadliest infectious disease in history, and drug-resistant strains now threaten to undo decades of treatment gains. BAFTA-winning filmmaker Jezza Neumann travels to Swaziland, a country with one of the highest MDR-TB rates in the world, to film two families living with the disease over the course of a year. The camera follows patients through diagnosis, isolation, and the grinding months of treatment that multi-drug-resistant TB demands, work that can take two years and still fail. Neumann shoots close, staying with his subjects through relapses and small recoveries rather than cutting away to experts or statistics. The film's case is made through what happens to these two households: the strain on income, childcare, and marriages when a parent or child is sick for a year or more, and the toll the disease takes long after the coughing starts.
