DW correspondent Kai Steinecke was filming a lifestyle series in Tel Aviv in the summer of 2023, meeting nightclub owners, restaurateurs, architects, and LGBTQ activists in what he calls the Middle East's party capital. Then October 7 happened, and in May 2024 he returns to the same people to see what changed. The film cuts between the pre-attack footage and the present, showing the square outside the Tel Aviv Museum of Art renamed Hostages Square, its empty chairs standing in for the kidnapped, and the once-crowded Carmel Market largely empty of customers. Bureka vendor Kobi Shmuel is drafted and deployed to Gaza, where a comrade of his is killed, and has to shutter his market stall. Architect Shiraz Solomon, previously shown converting a Templar-era building into luxury housing, now designs bunkers and accessible apartments for the wounded. Habima Square's theater district carries a lit sign reading "Bring them home." The result is a street-level account of how one specific city absorbed the war's aftermath, told through the people the crew already knew before it started.
