The Age of Mankind

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Dutch atmospheric chemist Paul Crutzen argues that Earth has left the Holocene behind and entered a new geological epoch shaped entirely by human activity: the Anthropocene. Produced by VPRO Backlight, the film builds its case through interviews with geologists, biologists, and philosophers who trace the human fingerprint left in rock strata, atmospheric carbon, plastic sediment, and the extinction rate of other species. Scientists debate when the epoch actually began, whether with the industrial revolution's coal smoke, the mid-twentieth century's nuclear tests, or earlier still with the spread of agriculture, and what marker future geologists millions of years from now would use to date it. The film moves between laboratories, core-sample archives, and landscapes visibly reshaped by mining and farming to make an abstract geological argument tangible. Underneath the science sits a harder question about responsibility: if humanity is now a geological force on par with volcanoes and ice ages, what obligation comes with that power, and can a species so recently arrived learn to see its own scale before the evidence is fossilized around it.
