Seven people who left Amish communities across the United States describe what it cost them: parents who stop speaking to them, church elders who read them out of fellowship, and a world outside that none of them were raised to navigate. Filmed over twelve months, the documentary follows these ex-Amish individuals through the practical work of leaving, learning to drive, opening a bank account, finding work that doesn't involve a horse and plow, while they sit for interviews about the families they no longer see. Amish men and women who stayed behind get equal time, explaining shunning not as cruelty but as obedience to a religious order that has held their communities together for generations, and describing their own grief over relatives who chose to go. The film moves between these two positions without resolving them, letting a mother's silence and a daughter's decision sit side by side. What emerges is a portrait of a closed society seen from both inside and outside its walls at once.
