Lap Ngo's paintings trace a life that moved through three continents before settling in one unlikely place: born in Vietnam, trained in France, then twenty-four years in Africa, and now working out of North Texas. The film follows his process from raw materials up, buying fine linen and stretching his own canvases before mixing paint for subjects as varied as the limestone islands of Halong Bay, a forgotten castle in Morocco, the grasslands of Africa, and a Texas cowboy's weathered hands. His African Series painting titled "Bride" gets singled out as an example of how a single image carries a whole story, in this case a wedding day. Alongside his studio work, Ngo teaches children about art and culture in North Texas, and the documentary treats that teaching as part of the same practice as the painting itself. The film won first place for Ethnic Experience and second for Documentary Profile at the 2013 NATOA awards, recognition for a portrait of an artist whose canvases double as a map of everywhere he has lived.
