The Baldies

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Minneapolis in the early 1980s had a small, tight punk scene, and out of it came the Baldies, a crew of skinheads who set themselves directly against the neo-Nazi skinhead gangs spreading through the same subculture. The film traces how a handful of kids at all-ages punk shows organized into a street-level anti-racist force, patrolling shows and neighborhoods to keep white supremacist recruiters out and to protect punks of color who were regular targets of harassment and violence. Interviews with former members recall the fistfights, the gang politics, and the uneasy relationship with police who often treated the Baldies as just another gang rather than distinguishing them from the racists they fought. Archival photos and flyers from the era's DIY show circuit ground the story in a specific time and place: basements, community centers, and record stores that doubled as battlegrounds. What emerges is a portrait of a subculture fighting over its own identity, years before anti-racist skinhead crews became a recognized part of punk history elsewhere in the country.
