Cameron Macauley started talking about a life on the island of Barra when he was two years old, and he has never lived there. He lives in Glasgow with his mother, Norma, and describes a white house overlooking a beach where planes used to land, siblings he played with, and a black and white dog. Now five, Cameron speaks of his "Barra mum and dad" and says his Barra father, Shane Robertson, died after being hit by a car. The details have not changed with time, and his distress over missing his other family has become real enough that Norma starts searching for an explanation. She consults Dr. Chris French, a psychologist who edits The Skeptic and points to overactive imagination fed by television, though Norma says Cameron had no access to it. Educational psychologist Karen Majors examines the case and finds it unlike ordinary childhood fantasy play. With no easy answer available, and Cameron still asking to go, Norma agrees to take him to Barra.
