In spring 1918, with the German army launching its last major offensive of the war, Britain sent 18-year-old conscripts to France to fill depleted ranks. This episode of the Last Voices of World War One series draws on a unique archive of interviews with veterans, many recorded only once and never broadcast since, as elderly men and their families recall being thrown into the front line as teenagers. Thousands of these young soldiers were captured during the German advance and endured months as prisoners of war, their accounts describing hunger, forced marches, and the daily grind of captivity. The film follows the reversal that came by summer, as Allied forces including these same conscripts helped push back the offensive and turn the tide toward victory. Built almost entirely from first-person testimony rather than reenactment, the episode lets the last generation of WWI veterans describe combat, capture, and survival in their own words, voices that by the time of filming were already becoming rare and are now all silent.
