The Business of War: SOFEX
SOFEX stands for Special Operations Forces Exhibition Conference, a trade show where generals, arms dealers, and private buyers browse everything from handguns to laser-guided missile systems. Vice correspondent Shane Smith walks the exhibition floor, talking to the manufacturers and military officials selling hardware to whoever can pay, regardless of which side of a conflict they represent. The premise driving the film is simple and unsettling: this is not a classified defense summit but something closer to a consumer expo, complete with booth displays and sales pitches, except the products are the tools of special forces warfare. Smith's approach stays observational, letting the vendors describe their own weapons and the buyers explain what they are shopping for, which does more to expose the scale of the global arms trade than any outside narration could. The film offers no resolution, only a walk through a marketplace most people never know exists.
