Riley H. Allen edits the Honolulu Star-Bulletin before he volunteers for the American Red Cross and ships out to Vladivostok, a Siberian port city sliding toward civil war by 1918. The crisis he walks into did not start as a war story: parents in St. Petersburg, worried about food shortages and unrest, had sent roughly eight hundred schoolchildren to summer camps in the countryside for safety. When the Russian Civil War spreads and cuts off the rail lines home, those children are stranded with no way back to their families. Allen and his Red Cross team improvise a solution that becomes a circumnavigation of the globe, moving the children by train and ship across Siberia, the Pacific, and eventually back to Russia by a different route entirely, since the original path is now a war zone. The film reconstructs this rescue and Allen's role organizing it, tracing a journey that took the children the long way around the world to get them home. It premiered at the Hawaii International Film Festival.
