The Coach Who Never Punts

2013 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Kevin Kelley runs the football program at Pulaski Academy, a small private school in Little Rock, Arkansas, and he has thrown out the sport's basic playbook. His team never punts, almost never lets the other side receive a kickoff, and onside-kicks nearly every time. The film follows Kelley through games and practices as he explains the math behind the madness: statistical analysis convinced him that punting away possession loses more than it protects, and that the risk of an onside kick pays off often enough to be worth it every time. Players, assistant coaches, and opposing coaches weigh in on what it's like to face an offense that refuses to play defense-first football, and game footage shows the strategy working in real fourth-down calls and kickoff gambles. Kelley comes across as more actuary than tactician, treating football as a series of probability problems rather than a battle of field position. The short makes the case that conventional coaching wisdom has been leaving points on the table for decades.
