Arthur C. Clarke hosts a tour through the Mandelbrot Set, the equation mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot used to reveal an entire universe of self-repeating pattern hidden inside a few lines of algebra. Clarke walks the coastline of Cornwall to explain why measuring a jagged edge depends on the size of your ruler, then hands off to Mandelbrot himself and to mathematicians including Michael Barnsley, who show how the same branching, spiraling shapes turn up in ferns, clouds, and stock market charts. Computer-generated zooms plunge into the set's boundary again and again, finding fresh detail at every scale, no matter how far in the camera goes. Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour composed the score, and it runs under the visuals as their own kind of proof, rock music built on the same idea of pattern within pattern. The film treats the Mandelbrot Set as a genuine philosophical shock: a simple formula generating infinite, unrepeating complexity, and asks what that says about the hidden order of the natural world.
