The Conditioned

2014 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Raimundo Arruda Sobrinho spent nearly 35 years living on the streets of São Paulo, sitting each day at the same corner and filling notebooks with poetry and reflections. The film follows him at that spot, camera close on his hands and face as he writes, while he talks about the choices and losses that put him there and the discipline that kept him returning to the same patch of sidewalk every morning. Passersby and the rhythm of the city move around him, indifferent at first, until his writing eventually draws attention and starts to change how people see him. Interviews and observational footage build a portrait of a man who turned a fixed routine into a form of survival and self-respect, resisting easy narratives about homelessness as pure misfortune or redemption. The film stays with him rather than with the wider debate, letting his own words, read aloud from his notebooks, carry the story of how a person holds onto identity when almost everything else has been stripped away.
