The ocean floor gets the same treatment usually reserved for outer space: an environment stranger and less explored than most of the solar system. The film follows researchers and submersible footage down through the water column, past bioluminescent jellyfish and anglerfish, to hydrothermal vents belching mineral-rich water at temperatures that would boil on the surface, and into trenches deep enough to swallow Everest. Along the way it covers underwater volcanoes still building new seafloor, tube worms and other creatures that survive without sunlight, and the extreme pressure that crushes anything not built to withstand it. Interviews with marine biologists and oceanographers explain how each organism adapts to darkness, cold, and crushing depth, while narration keeps the focus on why so much of this territory remains uncharted even now. The footage mixes real deep-sea camera work with animated diagrams showing scale and depth, making the case that the seafloor, not space, is the planet's last true frontier.
