The Crying Forest

2011 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Al Jazeera correspondent Gabriel Elizondo travels into the Brazilian Amazon to trace the life and death of an environmental activist who fought illegal loggers and ranchers clearing the rainforest around his community. Interviews with the activist's family and neighbors, along with footage of the scarred, deforested land he tried to protect, build a picture of a man who refused to leave even after repeated threats. Local officials, loggers, and fellow activists give their own accounts of the conflict over land and timber in the region, and the film lays out how weak law enforcement and economic pressure to clear land for cattle and charcoal make such killings common in the Amazon. Elizondo follows the aftermath of the murder, including the response from authorities and the activist's community, to ask whether his death will change anything on the ground. The film keeps its focus on the people living inside the deforestation crisis rather than statistics alone, using one death to show a much larger pattern of violence against forest defenders.
