In 1910, France's colonial administration in Laos loaded looted golden Buddha statues and other treasures onto the gunboat La Grandière, intending to ship them home. The vessel struck a submerged rock in the rapids south of Louangphrabang and sank with its crew, and local legend blames a curse laid on anyone who tried to remove the artifacts. The Dive Detectives, a father-and-son salvage team, travel to Laos to find the wreck in a stretch of the Mekong known for zero visibility, violent currents, and jagged rock. Unable to see anything by eye, they deploy a military-grade acoustic camera built for locating underwater objects in total darkness, turning sonar returns into shapes on a screen. The episode follows their planning, their failed attempts, and the physical toll of diving blind in a current strong enough to kill. Archival material on the French removal of the treasures and interviews with local sources fill out the history behind the wreck they are chasing.
