In the spring of 1947, three Bedouin shepherds searching the cliffs above the Dead Sea in what is now the West Bank stumble into a cave stacked with clay jars holding ancient parchment scrolls. The film follows how that chance find at Qumran grew into one of the twentieth century's largest archaeological stories, as scholars raced to authenticate and translate texts that included a complete copy of the Book of Isaiah a thousand years older than any previously known biblical manuscript. Interviews and archival photographs trace the scrolls through the hands of antiquities dealers, Hebrew University professor Eleazar Sukenik, and the international team that spent decades piecing together thousands of fragments. The documentary lays out the debate over who wrote the scrolls, with the Qumran-based Essene sect the leading candidate, and what they reveal about Judaism and early Christianity in the centuries before and after Jesus.
