Light traveling billions of years across space carries a paradox inside it: it behaves as both wave and particle, and it ties space to time through Einstein's Special Relativity. This film uses that paradox as its way into the life cycle of stars, from their birth in collapsing gas clouds through the fusion that powers them to the different ways they die, and what that death means for a universe that keeps expanding and cooling. Astronaut Ulrich Walter and astrophysicist Susanna Randall serve as the on-camera experts, explaining how ancient photons let astronomers look back toward the beginning of time and what the fading of starlight over cosmic timescales implies for the universe's long-term fate. Expect a mix of studio explanation, animation of stellar processes, and telescope imagery rather than dramatic reenactment. The film builds toward a genuinely open question in cosmology: whether the universe is headed for a slow, permanent dark.
