The Defectors
North Korean defectors sit for interviews in Seoul apartments, describing what happened to them inside the country they escaped. Sky News correspondent Mark Stone gathers testimony from men and women rebuilding their lives in South Korea, including two survivors of political prison camps and a former tank commander who fled the army. Cheon YoungSuk sobs as she recalls being beaten with a wooden plank until it split. Lee SoonShil describes a guard grinding his shoe against her bare skin and smashing her face into a desk corner. Their accounts echo the findings of a UN Commission of Inquiry, whose chairman, retired judge Michael Kirby, says the testimony reminded him of Holocaust-era atrocities and calls for a referral to the International Criminal Court. The film also notes that Russia and China skipped a UN Security Council briefing on the report, and that North Korea denies its prison camps exist at all. The interviews aired as part of a Sky News special broadcast on 2 May 2014.
