Jeanmarie, a Dutch street performer, packs a music box built around a dragon and a golden egg and sets off into rural China, where few Western visitors have ever gone. He travels with a partner named Frank, hauling the wondrous, hand-built machine from village to village and setting it up in courtyards and dirt squares for children who have never seen anything like it. The film follows the physical labor of the tour as much as the performances themselves: loading and unloading the contraption, finding places to sleep, negotiating with local families and officials who are not always sure what to make of two foreigners and a mechanical dragon. What comes through is the reaction on the children's faces, laughter and disbelief in roughly equal measure, and the odd, direct connection that forms between a European fairy-tale prop and communities living far outside China's cities. There is no larger argument here, just a small, strange act of cultural exchange carried out one village at a time.
