In 1914 Sir Ernest Shackleton set out on his third Antarctic expedition, aiming to cross the continent on foot after Robert Falcon Scott's fatal race to the South Pole had already claimed the prize of first arrival. This film follows the ship Endurance as it becomes trapped and eventually crushed by pack ice, forcing Shackleton's crew onto the floes and then into open boats for a desperate journey to Elephant Island. From there Shackleton and five men sail an open lifeboat eight hundred miles across the Southern Ocean to South Georgia, then cross uncharted mountains on foot to reach a whaling station and organize the rescue of the men left behind. Archival photographs from the expedition's own photographer, Frank Hurley, anchor the account, alongside historians who unpack the navigation, the food shortages, and the leadership decisions that kept the crew alive without a single loss of life.
