German police roll out the Survivor R today, an armored truck built on an MAN chassis with a 6.9 liter diesel engine, all-wheel drive, and a welded steel cabin rated against ballistic and blast threats. This film traces how that vehicle got here, starting with the improvised "street tanks" German authorities deployed during the 1918 Revolution to control crowds and armed uprisings in Berlin and other cities. From there it follows a century of incremental armor development, as manufacturers and police forces responded to each new threat in turn, from thrown Molotov cocktails and paving stones to rifle fire and improvised explosives. Archival footage and vehicle photographs anchor the historical sections, while the modern portions detail the Survivor R's engineering: its mobility, customizable turret and camera options, and the design tradeoffs between protecting officers and keeping a vehicle usable on city streets. The throughline is less about any single riot or reform than about how domestic policing hardware kept absorbing lessons from whatever crowd or weapon it faced last.
