When Lenin dies in 1924, Josef Stalin maneuvers into the power vacuum inside the Soviet Communist Party. Elsewhere the men who will define the coming decades are still on the way up: Franklin Roosevelt is serving as U.S. Secretary of the Navy, Winston Churchill is trying to claw his way back into British politics after years in the wilderness, and a wounded Adolf Hitler is recovering in a German military hospital as the First World War ends. The film opens with the first of these figures to actually seize power, Benito Mussolini, tracing how his march on Rome sets a template for the strongman politics that will follow. Using archival photographs, period footage, and narrated biography, the episode moves between these parallel life stories, showing how ambition, defeat, and circumstance positioned five very different men to shape the twentieth century's most destructive conflicts.
