Albert Einstein's general relativity rewrote gravity as the curvature of spacetime, but it left a problem buried inside its own equations: black holes, where the math breaks down into infinities. This film traces that unresolved flaw from Einstein's original insights on time dilation and the bending of light through to Stephen Hawking's work decades later, when he applied quantum theory to the edges of black holes and predicted that they leak radiation and eventually evaporate. Using animated recreations of spacetime curvature, archival photographs, and narrated walkthroughs of the key equations, the film lays out how each theory built on the last, from Einstein's field equations to the detection of gravitational waves nearly a century after he predicted them. It treats Hawking radiation as the fix that let physicists stop treating black holes as pure mathematical catastrophes and start treating them as objects with a life cycle, however slow. The result is a plain, chronological account of how two physicists' ideas fit together into one continuous argument about gravity, time, and the fate of collapsed stars.
