The Fate of America

Filmmaker Jacques Godbout and playwright René-Daniel Dubois take on the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, the 1759 clash between British and French forces that decided the fate of Quebec and, by extension, North America. Rather than simply recounting the battle, the film turns into a debate between the two men about how history should be told at all: Godbout arguing for the documentary record, Dubois pushing for the freedom of fiction to get at emotional truth. Their disagreement plays out through discussion, archival material, and competing versions of the same events, with each man testing the other's claims about what actually happened on the battlefield and what it means for Quebec's identity centuries later. The film never settles the argument cleanly, leaving the viewer to weigh whether a nation's founding moment belongs to historians or storytellers.
